Spotlight- French Lick Springs Hotel
The
history of French Lick
Springs Hotel can be traced back to the late 1800’s when it
was made famous by the "miracle waters" found in the area. While the
hotel thrived under all its owners, its real rise to fame came during
the early 1900’s when the property was purchased by, then Indianapolis
mayor, Tom Taggart.
With
daily train schedules from Chicago, The French Lick Springs Hotel was
welcoming guests by the trainload. Such famous names as John Barrymore,
Clark Gable, Bing Crosby, The Truman’s, The Reagan’s, President
Roosevelt and many others were visitors.
Because
the area was dedicated to health and fitness, it often surprises
visitors to hear the sordid past involving gambling and politics. The
recent renovation of French Lick
Springs Hotel has allowed visitors to hear colorful stories
of past generations, while experiencing the beauty and glamour of this
magnificent hotel property. We are happy to suggest the historic
walking tour to any group who may be interested. To learn more about
the group tours offered, please visit The Historic Landmarks Foundation
of Indiana at www.historiclandmarks.org.
